Annual Tire War
Keep Perry County Beautiful is once again participating in the annual Tire War in conjunction with Mifflin, Huntingdon, and Juniata Counties. The infamous Gold Rim Award will be given to the county that collects the most tires during their four-hour collection. The collection is open to all Perry County residents and will take place on Saturday, September 15th from 8 A.M. until 12 P.M. at the Oliver Township Building in Newport, PA located at 615 South Third Street. The event is being sponsored by Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, Keep Perry County Beautiful, and the Perry Conservation District in partnership with Oliver Township.
Collection fees are as follows:
• Car/truck size: $2 per tire
• Tractor trailer size: $5 per tire
• Large tractor tires: $15 per tire
• Tires with rims will be accepted
• Tires from any commercial operation cannot be accepted
The ultimate goal of the Tire War is to encourage residents to gather up old tires and bring them in for proper disposal. Keeping tires out of forests, fields, and off of roadsides prevents them from becoming mosquito breeding grounds, a source of pollution, and helps to keep Perry County a clean and beautiful place to live and work. 100 % of the collected tires will be hauled to and recycled by Mahantango Enterprises of Liverpool, PA. This recycled rubber will later be used for track surfaces, roadway construction, and rubber mulch.
For more information about the event or to register as a volunteer for the day, please contact Kristie Smith, Keep Perry County Beautiful Coordinator, at #717-582-5138 or by email at email@example.com. Residents bringing 50 or more tires are asked to call ahead during the week.
