September Programs at Little Buffalo State Park

Shoaff’s Mill – 1-3 pm on Saturdays & Sundays & from 10am-12pm Monday the 3rd (Labor Day).

** Exception – Sunday Sept. 2nd the Mill will be running from 3:30-5pm.

Blue Ball Tavern - 1-4 pm Open Sundays

Fri. Aug. 31th & more dates to come! - Evening Kayaking - 5:30 -7:00 pm. Meet us at the East Boat Launch at the end of Boat Launch Road for an evening kayak. This is a limited participation event and registration is required. Call the park office at 717-567-9255 or email littlebuffsp@pa.gov to register. 9 kayaks & life jackets are available to borrow, but you may bring your own kayak. Children must be 12 years or older to participate. Other dates may become available as the weather cooperates. Call the office or check our Facebook page for updates.

Sat. Sept. 1st – Meet the Crayfish – 10:30 – 11:30am – Stop by the stage in the East area of the park during this time to get a look at some of the different species of crayfish we have at Little Buffalo. Do you know which crayfish are invasive and which ones are native? Learn some fun facts about crayfish and the role they play in our ecosystem.

Sun. Sept. 2nd – Wild Edibles! – 1 -3pm. Join us at the park office for a special guest! Debbie Naha will be sharing her expertise on wild edible plants and guiding a foraging walk as well as a cooking demonstration. This event will occur rain or shine and registration is required. There is a small fee of $5 per person and space is limited to 25 individuals. Call 717-567-9255 for more information or to register.

Sat. Sept 8th – Reptiles Rule! – 4-5pm - We will be learning about Pennsylvania’s native reptiles! Little Buffalo is home to a wide variety of reptiles. How many do you know? This event will be held at the pavilion above the campground, so please park in the extra car parking lot and walk up the hill. Look for signs.

Sun. Sept. 9th – Nature Walk – 10-11:00am – We will be taking a walk along the Mill Race and looking for wildlife. A variety of birds, butterflies, and wildflowers can be seen on the short, easy hike. Comfortable walking shoes are a must and bug spray is recommended. Meet near the stage in the East area of the park. Some binoculars are provided, and cameras are welcome.

Fri. Sept. 14th – Who’s Been Here? – 5:30-6:30pm - All ages can come and learn to identify animal tracks! We will be making our own tracks as well as learning some identification tips to help us figure out who has been here before us. This event will be held at the pavilion above the campground, so please park in the extra car parking lot and walk up the hill. Look for signs.

Sun. Sept. 16th – Stream Study – 10:30-11:30am - Kids of all ages, come and help us do a Stream Study! We will be in the creek catching macroinvertebrates. We will collect and identify the animals and learn what they can tell us about the health of a stream. Afterwards, we let them all go. Meet by the stage in the East Area of the park off of Boat Launch Road.

Sat. Sept. 22nd – Birding Walk – 10am-11:30am – Join us as we take a walk along the Little Buffalo Creek to look for birds. September is a great time to look for migrating birds. We will meet in the parking lot of Pavilion 1 & 2 off of Swimming Pool Road.

Sat. Sept. 29th – We’re Talking Trees - 3:30-4:30pm – Join us at the Mill for a lesson on tree ID and their importance to wildlife. Afterwards, we will go on a short hike to practice our skills.

Sun. Sept. 30th – Birding Walk – 9:30am- 11:00am – We will be meeting at the park office to walk the exercise trail in search of songbirds. Bring comfortable walking shoes.
