Little Buffalo State Park - Winter Programs

Note: The one lane bridge on State Park Road is scheduled to be closed for replacement from March 11 to April 21.  You will need to enter the park from rt 34 onto State Park Road if you are going to the East Area parking lot (mill, covered bridge, stage, main boat launch).  If you are headed to the park office, Blueball Tavern or the main picnic area please use Little Buffalo Road.

Build a Soda Bottle Bird Feeder

Description: Bring a clean, DRY 1 liter or 24 oz soda bottle with the cap, and we’ll help you turn it into a bird feeder for the winter months. Participants bring a DRY bottle, all other supplies provided. (Bottles must be clean and dry.) We have the spotting scope set up to watch the feeders and we’ll also learn a little about what sort of seeds attract which species of birds. Meet at the park office NOTE: event may be cancelled due to weather related travel issues. If event is cancelled due to weather concerns, there will be a notification on the park’s answering machine.

Description: Join us for a 30 minute film on the Elk Herd of Pennsylvania. These majestic creatures are thriving in the Pennsylvania Wilds. Learn how Elk were successfully reintroduced to the state.

Fisher/ Otter Reintroduction

Description: Enjoy a short film about the 1996 reintroduction of Fishers and River Otters to Pennsylvania. There will be a short talk afterwards to see how the populations of these two mammals are doing. A Fisher and Otter mount will be on hand for a closer inspection. Meet at the park office.

Winter Tree ID walk

Description: As we walk, learn some basic ways to identify trees without foliage. Branch arrangement, bark and buds help us to identify winter trees. Meet at the entertainment pavilion in the park's East Area.

Description: Join us for a short film about bats, Many myths endure about bats and most are untrue. Bats are extrmely beneficial to our world but are dying off in the US, do you know why? Learn about bat rescuers, and ways you can help bats. a short discussion about our local Pa bats will follow.

Description: The park naturalist will present the short film "Dangerous Invaders". Sound like science fiction? We wish it was. Learn about the effects of invasive plant species on our environment. Movie will be followed by a short dicussion of the types you might find at home. Meet at the Park Office.

Description: Depending on the timing of the sap run this event will consist of tapping trees and collecting sap or an indoor program with a short movie on the history of maple sugaring a talk and pancakes with real maple syrup. Meet at the park office. For this event your want to enter the park from route 34 onto Little Buffalo Road, as the one lane bridge on State Park Road will be closed.
