The Coroner is an elected official whose job it is to investigate deaths of a suspicious or violent nature. When necessary, a jury of inquest can be called to determine the cause of death. When inquests are warranted, the coroner is empowered to perform autopsies, subpoena witnesses, administer oaths, and compel attendance at an inquest. The Coroner is required to issue a certificate of cause of death if such occurs without medical attention or attendance. The powers and duties of this position are specified in the county code.
The Coroner may appoint one or more deputies to act for him/her as deemed necessary.
